Galaxy A53 and A33: Samsung's new waterproof 5G mid-range costs from 370 euros

Samsung has unveiled the successors to the popular A-Class: Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53 both come with 5G standard, IP certification and a long update guarantee.

After Samsung launched its Galaxy S22 series (test) in February, it is now the turn of the mid-range models: The Galaxy A53 inherits the Galaxy A52, which was last available as the A52s, and the A33 follows the Galaxy A32. The Galaxy A53 starts from 449 euros*, the Galaxy A33 costs 369 euros. A cheaper 4G version as with the predecessors is no longer available.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G: Familiar design, new equipment

With the 6.5-inch AMOLED screen and 2,400 x 1,080 pixels, the Samsung Galaxy A53 has the same display diagonal and resolution as its predecessor. However, like Samsung's top models, the device supports a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. However, this does not switch automatically, but remains fixed on the efrequency; optionally, it can be adjusted down to 60 Hertz in the settings. Samsung gives the brightness of the screen with 420 nits.

As a processor, Samsung uses the newly announced Exynos 1800 eight-core processor, which is manufactured in the five-nanometer process and clocked at up to 2.4 gigahertz (2 x 2.4 GHz, 6 x 2 GHz). Depending on the model, the system-on-a-chip (SoC) is supported by six to eight gigabytes of RAM and 128 or 256 gigabytes of flash memory expandable via micro SD card.

For the rear camera, Samsung relies on four lenses: The main camera has a sensor with 64 megapixels, f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS) and autofocus (AF). The ultra-wide-angle camera uses a twelve-megapixel sensor with f/2.2, which is accompanied by a five-megapixel depth camera and a macro camera with the same resolution and identical f/2.4 aperture. The selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture resolves with 32 megapixels and is also located in the Galaxy A33.

Samsung Galaxy A33: Budget model with 5G

The Galaxy A33 has a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with Full HD Plus resolution, which, unlike the A53, offers a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hertz and can be reduced to 60 Hertz if necessary. The processor is the same as in the A53, but the RAM is at six gigabytes end. With flash memory, there is only the 128-gigabyte option, which can also be expanded via micro SD.

In terms of camera, Samsung also relies on four lenses, but the main camera has a 48-megapixel sensor with f/1.8, OIS and AF. The ultra-wide-angle camera has an eight-megapixel sensor with f/2.2, the depth camera comes with only two megapixels (f/2.4) and the macro camera with five megapixels (f/2.4).

Common to both models is the large 5,000-milliampere-hour battery, which can be charged with up to 25 watts. As with the top models, the power supply is no longer included in the scope of delivery. Furthermore, WLAN according to ac standard, 5G, Bluetooth 5.1 and an in-display fingerprint sensor are on board. Samsung has deleted the popular headphone jack: According to the manufacturer, you can use the USB-C to 3.5 millimeter adapter or use Bluetooth earplugs, as many would already do, according to the company.

For a mid-range device, certification according to protection class IP67 is rather rare, which protects it against water and dust. We remember: not even Xiaomi's new 12-series upper-class models have such protection.

The software comes with Android 12 pre-installed with Samsung's own One UI 4.1 user interface. In addition, the manufacturer promises its mid-range models a long runtime, because like the S22 series, the A33 and A53 will receive four major Android updates and up to five years of security updates. This puts Samsung above even Google, which has pledged three major Android updates and five years of security patches for the Pixel 6 models.

How much does the Samsung Galaxy A53 cost?

The Samsung Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53 are both offered in blue (Awesome Blue), black (Awesome Black), Peach (Awesome Peach) and white (Awesome White). Samsung sells the A53 optionally with six gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of memory or eight gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of flash memory. The models with less memory from 449 euros* – so as much as the Galaxy A52s. The A53 with eight gigabytes of RAM costs 509 euros. For the Galaxy A33 5G, Samsung charges 369 euros.

According to the manufacturer, the Galaxy A53 5G will be available directly from Samsung and in German stores from April 1, 2022. The Galaxy A33 5G will not launch until April 22, 2022.
